During these dog days of summer, we thought it was a perfect time to talk about including your favorite four-legged friend in your wedding.  We know you want have all of your loved ones on hand at your wedding, so why not include your furry loves, as well?  

Even before the big day, your pet can be a star in your wedding story.  You can enlist your pet’s help to make your proposal – maybe a “Will You Marry Me” sign around your pooch’s neck?  Or, perhaps include your pet in your engagement or save the date announcement photo.

When your wedding day does roll around, there are plenty of great roles for your pet to play.  You can dress your pup in a doggie tux or black-tie collar and have him step in as ring bearer.  Your furry “daughter” can make a lovely flower “girl” wearing a crown of flowers or a decorative collar to match your bouquet.  Although dogs are the most popular pet to be included in the wedding party, it’s not unheard of to see a cat or rabbit participate, as well.  One bride carried her bunny in a small bag in lieu of a bouquet!  

While you may be tempted to include your pet in every part of your wedding day, consider that some pets may be overwhelmed by music and dancing at your reception . Take heart, though, your pet can always be included with you & your groom there… just add a figure of him or her on your wedding cake topper.  You could also use creative photos of your furry friend as backdrops for your table number settings.  

With all of these great opportunities to have your pet, there a few final things to consider. First and foremost, make sure in advance that the venue you choose is pet friendly.  Just as important is making sure your pet will be comfortable being in attendance at your wedding.  Some pets can get very stressed in a different environment with lots of strangers.  If possible, coordinate with your venue to rehearse with your pet ahead of time.  Also, be sure to designate a handler to be in charge of your pet while they’re not participating with you in the wedding festivities.  Finally, just as you’ll be sure to have your hair and make-up done, treat your dog to a full-on grooming session so your pet is as camera ready as you’ll be.
