There are a variety of traditions around the world, especially when it comes to weddings. The United States has numerous traditions, all different depending on what region you may live.  The south in particular, with its deep-rooted history, has some of the most intriguing wedding traditions.

Groom’s cakes are a favorite southern wedding tradition that can be dated back from Victorian-era England.  At that time, the groom and bride had their own cakes in addition to the wedding cake. The groom’s cake was sliced and served to the groomsmen and the bride’s cake was cut up and given to the bridesmaids. The groom’s cake was typically a fruitcake of some sort. Lucky for us, the tradition has changed for the better. Today, cakes for the groom are usually comprised of dark chocolate with fruit on top or liquor mixed in. Surprising your groom with his own cake is a fun way to give him special recognition on a day where most people will be looking at you. Have the cake decorated with some of your future hubby’s favorite hobbies like hunting or his most loved sports team. Located right outside of Austin, the most dog-friendly city in the country, the groom’s best four-legged friend commonly graces the top of Ma Maison groom’s cakes. We have seen it all!

Having an outdoor wedding is what many girls dream of. Only one element can stop that dream from becoming a reality, which is rain. A long time custom to keep away the rain on your wedding day is to bury a bottle of bourbon. The rules: The bottle must be buried at your outdoor ceremony venue precisely one month from your wedding day. The bottle must be full, sealed, and buried upside down as close as possible to where you will be saying your vows. On the day of your wedding, the bottle is dug up and shared with your wedding party at the reception.  For a fun twist on the tradition, have a bourbon tasting at cocktail hour or incorporate the bourbon in a signature drink.

Southern bridal parties just seem to be bigger, than northern bridal parties. Many Texas brides may have found that over the years, they have made many friends but how do you include all of them on your wedding day? The answer is a “house party.” House parties consist of the bride’s friends and family who are no directly in the bridal party but are considered honorary bridesmaids. These girls do not stand at the altar with the bride but are assigned other wedding duties, like manning the guest book, handing out programs, or giving a reading at the ceremony. With a larger house party, not every girl will get a task but will still be included in the bridal festivities. These ladies can be seated in the front or second row behind family during the ceremony, as well as be mentioned in the wedding program.  Have the girls in the house party wear a different shade of the color dresses that the bridesmaids are in to incorporate your close friends that are not in the bridal party.

Northern cities may not understand the love of college football but here in Texas, it is a different story. Although this may not be a tradition, it is a known fact. Football families know not to select a wedding date on your college team’s game days. Many southern couples avoid football season altogether or choose a day that the team has a bye week. Some family and friends may have a hard time deciding to come to the wedding if they happen to be diehard fans of the sport. No worries, though, Ma Maison has a big flat screen TV in the Groom’s Den for the loyal guests to watch their football game if you just so happen to select a game day for your wedding.  Since football is so popular here, incorporating the sport into your wedding day can be an entertaining way to include your fiancé’s likes into your wedding. Selecting you or husband to be’s favorite team’s colors into your wedding décor or surprising the new Mr. with a football themed groom’s cake would be an ideal way to integrate everyone’s love for the game. Extra points for you if you can manage to get the team’s mascot to make an appearance at the reception!
